Get your Instrument Rating via CB-IR (IR-A) | E-Flight Academy
Do you want to get your instrument rating (IR) and be able to fly by instruments in all weather conditions? At E-Flight Academy, you can do that through the modern, flexible CB-IR route (Competency-Based Instrument Rating): shorter turnaround time, plenty of training on our advanced simulator, and exactly the same IFR privileges as a classic IR.
What is an instrument rating?
With an instrument rating, you may fly IFR — fully on instruments, even through clouds and in limited visibility. It is the logical next step after your PPL and a must for anyone who wants to fly seriously and year-round, or progress toward a commercial licence.
CB-IR vs. classic IR vs. BIR
- CB-IR — competency-based: you train until you can do it, not until a fixed block of hours is used up. Plenty of simulator time, flexible scheduling, full IFR privileges. This is the route we recommend.
- Classic IR — same privileges, but with a fixed, longer, and often more expensive hours structure.
- BIR (Basic Instrument Rating) — a lighter rating with limitations; not a full IFR qualification for those who want to go further.
Why so much training on the simulator?
You learn IFR flying fastest and safest on a good simulator. You practice approaches, holdings, and failure scenarios as often as needed, without depending on the weather and at lower cost. The part that belongs in the air, you then fly on our Bristell B23 with real IFR approaches at Lelystad and Groningen.
From PPL to IFR: what does the path look like?
You start with an assessment. Based on that, you receive a personal, transparent training plan — no surprises afterwards. After that, you train in a structured way on the simulator and in the air until you are ready for the skill test.
What does a CB-IR cost?
Because the CB-IR is competency-based, the cost depends on your experience and progress. That is why we start with an assessment of €990, after which you receive a personal quote. That way, you pay for what you need and not for a standard package that does not suit you.
