Aircraft ground handling — preventing collisions on platform and hangar

Use a wing walker, move slowly, switch to hand-pushing near obstacles. Take your time. No schedule justifies aircraft damage.

Background

Incidents related to movement of aircraft in the hangar or on the platform keep occurring. Damaged empennages, tip strikes at the fuel pump, charger collisions — these are preventable. To prevent collisions, the following procedures apply at all times.

Key points

  • Always use a wing walker when moving aircraft
  • Move slowly and stay aware of your surroundings
  • Switch to hand-pushing when near obstacles
  • Fully open hangar doors before moving aircraft
  • Park strategically to minimise future movements
  • Required actions

  • Never move an aircraft without a wing walker
  • Open hangar doors fully before any movement starts
  • Switch from tug/tow to hand-push when within 2 metres of any obstacle
  • When parking, think one step ahead — will the next aircraft need to move past this one?
  • Slow down. No schedule pressure justifies aircraft damage.
