Which ATPL Training Should You Choose? Modular vs Full-Time (2026) | E-Flight

Becoming a traffic pilot is one of the biggest decisions you will make — and choosing the right ATPL training is where it starts. This guide helps you compare the modular and full-time (integrated) routes, understand the role of the simulator, and choose the training that fits your pace, budget, and career goals. E-Flight Academy trains via the modular route — deliberately, because it gives you the most freedom.

What is an ATPL?

The ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot Licence) is the highest level of pilot certification and the requirement to become a captain on a traffic aircraft. In practice, you build toward it in stages: a private licence (PPL), an instrument rating, a commercial licence (CPL) and the ATPL theory. View our ATPL program.

Modular vs. full-time: the key choice

There are two main routes into aviation. E-Flight trains via the modular route; we do not offer full-time/integrated training.

Modular ATPL (the E-Flight route)

  • Train in separate blocks (PPL → building hours → IR → CPL → ATPL theory).
  • You earn licenses along the way. After each stage, you have a real, valid licence in hand — not just a paper milestone.
  • Maximum flexibility. You pay per stage, keep working or studying in the meantime, and set your own pace.
  • Stop along the way? Then you keep your licence. You lose nothing of what you have already achieved — you can pick up again later.

Full-time / integrated ATPL

  • One continuous, structured program from zero to frozen ATPL.
  • Fast if you can commit fully, but rigid and expensive upfront — and if you stop halfway, you often still do not have a standalone licence.
  • We do not offer this; we believe in the flexibility and security of the modular route.

How to choose: 4 questions

  1. Pace — Do you want the freedom to train around work and life? Then the modular route is right for you.
  2. Budget — Would you rather spread the investment over stages? Modular lets you pay as you progress.
  3. Security — Do you want to have a real licence in hand after every step, even if you pause halfway through? That is exactly the strength of modular.
  4. Career goal — The modular route leads to exactly the same licence and the same airline-ready competencies. What matters is that you finish well-trained and current.

Why simulator experience is decisive

Modern airline training revolves around the simulator. A good simulator lets you practice approaches, holds, failures, and decision-making repeatedly — safely, regardless of weather, and more cheaply than flight hours. When comparing training providers, the quality and availability of the simulator is one of the best predictors of how well prepared you are. At E-Flight Academy, advanced simulator training is the core of both the instrument rating and the ATPL route.

A realistic pilot career

Most pilots follow this sequence: PPL → instrument rating (we recommend the flexible CB-IR route) → CPL → ATPL theory → type rating at an airline. The beauty of modular training: at each step you earn a licence and can decide how far you want to go.

Why train at E-Flight Academy?

  • No waiting list — start almost immediately and keep momentum in your journey.
  • Modular, with licences along the way — more flexibility and security; if you stop halfway, you keep your licence.
  • Capacity and quality — modern fleet, advanced simulator, and experienced instructors.
  • The most modern flight school in the Netherlands — clear communication and top locations in Teuge and Lelystad.
