Who is it for?
Have you previously held a SEP class rating that has since expired? You can renew it with us through refresher training and a proficiency check with an examiner — you won't need to complete the full training. Never held a SEP rating? By law, you must complete the full training and a skill test: see the SEP Rating. You need a valid licence (LAPL, PPL or higher) and a medical certificate of at least Class 2.
What is the assessment?
You complete the assessment in the aircraft of your choice: the fully electric Pipistrel Velis Electro, the Pipistrel Virus Explorer or the Bristell B23. It includes:
- One flying lesson (a 2-hour slot, with 45 minutes of flight time in the Velis or 1 hour in the Explorer/Bristell), including a comprehensive pre- and post-flight briefing, during which your instructor assesses both your flying skills and theoretical knowledge
- 3 landings, including landing fees
- An hour with your instructor for the debrief and to put together your personal training plan
Immediately after the assessment, you'll know where you stand: you'll receive a training plan with a tailored quote for the next steps. Have you flown recently and are your skills already up to standard? Then the plan may be very short, and we can schedule the proficiency check straight away.
What additional costs are there after the assessment? (charged based on actual costs)
- Follow-up lessons based on your training plan, until you reach exam standard
- Landing fees
- Aircraft hire for the proficiency check: 1 hour — 1 flight in the Explorer/Bristell, or 2 flights in the Velis (the check cannot be completed on a single battery charge). You cannot schedule the proficiency check yourself: once you are ready, we will arrange an appointment together with you and the examiner.
- The examiner's fee — allow for approximately €250; this amount varies because examiners set their own rates
- Any theory refresher training, tailored to your needs (billed separately)
- Please note: If fuel prices rise sharply, we apply a temporary fuel surcharge. This surcharge is calculated in the final invoice.
What about the theory?
The briefings also cover theory, and your instructor assesses your knowledge before the proficiency check to ensure it meets the required standard. During the check, the examiner assesses your theoretical knowledge orally. Flying the Velis with no previous electric flying experience? Then the online Pipistrel course (CBT) is part of your training; it is billed separately.
Good to know
- A SEP class rating is valid for the type of aircraft you take the check in: if you choose an electric aircraft, you cannot then simply fly a fuel-powered model, and vice versa. If you want to fly both, we recommend renewing the rating on the fuel-powered model and then completing the E-conversion to the Velis — no exam is required for this.
- Is your rating still valid, but approaching its expiry date? In that case, you need a revalidation rather than a renewal — a training flight or proficiency check is often sufficient. Get in touch and we will check what applies in your situation.
- You are responsible for applying to KIWA to have your licence amended. We will help you get started.
