Weather or no weather
E-Flight Academy's Instrument Rating Course uses advanced simulators, so pilots can learn the art of flying according to Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) in a sustainable way. This training has two major advantages: because much of the training takes place in the simulator, you're usually not dependent on the weather for these lessons, and by making fewer flight hours in actual aircraft, you get intensive training in a realistic, safe virtual environment. This makes the course perfect for pilots who want to improve their skills while minimizing the environmental impact of their training. Best of both worlds!

What can you do with an Instrument Rating?
With an Instrument Rating, you're allowed to fly according to IFR (Instrument Flight Rules). This means you can fly through clouds or fog, also called blind flying. This skill significantly increases your flying possibilities. Just think of all the days you couldn't fly due to bad weather – with your IR in hand, that becomes a thing of the past!

Course content

The complete flight training consists of a minimum of 50 hours IR flight time with dual flight instruction, divided into two modules (Basic Instrument Flight Module (BIFM) and the Procedural Instrument Flight Module (PIFM)). If you've already completed the BIFM elsewhere, you can also take only the PIFM with us. Use the filter on this page to see the price of this product.

Basic Instrument Flight Module
This includes 10 hours of instrument flight time with instructor. Of this, 5 hours are flown on a simulator and 5 hours on a Bristell B23. The last lesson is a progress test. After completing the Basic Instrument Flight Module, the candidate receives a course completion certificate.

Procedural Instrument Flight Module
This includes the rest of the training program for the IR(A), 40 hours of instrument flight time with instruction. Of this, 30 hours are flown on a simulator and 10 hours on the Bristell B23. This module includes two progress tests.

This training includes:

  • 15 VFR landings at Teuge
  • 83 hours of instruction
  • All electricity and fuel required
  • CO2 compensation via TreeByTree (arranged by us)

This training excludes:

  • All fees for landings and ATC at other airfields
  • Theory training and theory exam
  • Flight exam (aircraft rental, landings, examiner rental and Kiwa costs)

Criteria to start the Instrument Rating Course

  • Basic Qualification: Hold at least a PPL (A) (Private Pilot License for aircraft)
  • Night flying privileges (if you want to fly IFR in the dark): Have the privileges to fly at night in accordance with FCL.810, if IR privileges will be used at night; or hold an ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot License) in another category of aircraft; or a CPL (Commercial Pilot License) in the relevant aircraft category.
  • Flight experience: At least 50 hours flight time as pilot-in-command (PIC) on cross-country flights in aircraft, TMGs (Touring Motor Gliders), helicopters or airships, of which at least 10 hours or, in the case of airships, 20 hours must be in the relevant aircraft category.
  • Theoretical Knowledge Certificate: A valid theoretical knowledge certificate.
  • A valid Medical Certificate Class 1 or 2 (with class 2, an additional audiogram must be taken at the AME for the IR(A))
  • PPL holders usually have an RT on their license with a limitation to VFR flying. To extend this, an additional practical course must be taken.

Frequently asked questions

  • How long does the IR(A) training take?

    Together with the student, E-Flight Academy will aim to complete the flight training for an IR(A) in approximately 8 to 10 weeks. However, in most cases the duration of the course will be determined by student availability and weather, which may extend the timeline. IR students are required to complete the theory state exams before starting the IR course.

    The theoretical part of the IR course must be completed within 18 months at the latest, and the practical part in any case within the validity period of the theoretical state exams (36 months after successful completion of the last state exam). The BIFM and/or PIFM phases of flight instruction are followed in a continuous training program organized by E-Flight Academy.

    The flight training overview shows the minimum required training. Each training flight has a completion standard that must be achieved before moving on to the next training flight. If the required standard is not achieved within the minimum allocated time, it will be necessary to repeat all or part of the training flight, which will likely result in an extension of the course beyond the minimum hours. Mandatory exercises not flown within a syllabus flight are automatically added to the next instruction flight by the IT system.

  • What does the theoretical knowledge training involve? The theoretical knowledge training includes at least 350 hours of training, although both the training and exam fall outside the scope of the E-Flight Academy IR(A) course and will be conducted by a theoretical knowledge ATO. If you want to become a professional pilot (also check our Zero-to-Hero information), we recommend following the ATPL(A) theory (+/- 750 hours) which already includes the IR theory.

  • How is student progress assessed? There are 3 theoretical progress tests (PTs) embedded in the E-Flight IR(A) syllabus. Each progress test has a minimum passing percentage of 75%. The practical part includes flight progress checks (PCs) where each exercise must achieve a minimum performance level as indicated in the syllabus.

  • Can I have previous experience count towards the IR(A) training? Yes, holders of a CPL(A), BIR, or a course completion certificate for the BIFM can reduce the total amount of required training by 10 hours and start in the PIFM phase. Holders of an IR(H) can reduce the total amount of required training to 10 hours.

  • Where is the IR(A) training given? The training is given at E-Flight Academy in Teuge. The IFR approaches will be performed at airfields such as Lelystad and Groningen. For more information, you can contact us at hello@eflight.nl or call +31 55 203 2230.

  • Is the IR exam included in the price?

    The IR 'skill test' is not included in the price. An exam has a standard level that must be demonstrated. Therefore, an exam will not always take the same amount of time.

    The exam is not part of the training. The aircraft is rented by the candidate for the exam and E-Flight arranges an examiner. Invoicing of aircraft rental and examiner including the number of landings and fuel is done afterwards by E-Flight.

I always had this little desire to "fly a plane". We don't have this opportunity in India (unless you sign up for the full license training etc). Last week, when I visited Netherlands, my son recommended E-Flight academy. I had booked the class for the day I arrived. However the weather was not good and the school rescheduled it to another day. We drove down from Amsterdam and were greeted by the trainer. Warm welcome, coffee, and explained about the aircraft, the controls and other aspects. I got into the plane and was guided superbly by the trainer - to the extent that I could do most of the actions - taxi, takeoff, some of the maneuvering (stall, 360 turn, go up down, fly along the river etc). Landing was done by the trainer and followed by a debrief. Personally, a superb experience - the school, the staff who managed the appointment, the trainer and the actual flying !

I fly as an instructor on the same type of electric plane back home in Norway, so when I visited the area I just had to do a quick flight with E-Flight. This school is nothing other than impressive. The details put the dot over the i. They even have their own solar panels on the roof. Both the instructor and the rest of the staff are super welcoming and friendly, and skilled. The Velis Electro is an awesome airplane, quiet and comfortable - and E-Flights instructors make this into a great experience. Highly recommended! My son (16) flew (himself!) with a seasoned E-Flight Academy instructor and could not stop talking about it on the way back home. Don't think this is just a fun attraction though, they are serious about flying. And take you serious. Even in this introductionary flight he got to learn a lot about the procedures, the plane, the avionics. And of course it is also great fun! It was a wonderful afternoon. And since it was an electric flight and E-flight Academy creates their own solar energy it was silent and clean! Thank you so much, we wish you many successes in pioneering the future of flight!

I did a trial lesson here and it was an amazing experience! The aircraft are brand new, the instructor was great and I could control the aircraft for most of the flight, doing some really interesting manoeuvres. It was also a good opportunity to learn more about electric aircraft.

Last Thursday I went flying at E-flight academy in Teuge to try out a class on the Pipistrel velis electro, I was really looking forward to flying an electric plane as its something new and innovative. The instructor was very friendly and gave a great explanation of the basics. While in the air the instructor still demonstrated some manoeuvres such as a stall and sharp turns. When it was my turn to fly I made some turns and went flying around the clouds, it was great! Overall I would say give it a try, flying electric is also a lot quieter.
