Winter operations preparedness — cold weather flying

Velis winter kit, battery pre-heat, defogging, bird migration awareness, slippery platforms. Plan extra prep time.

Background

Winter brings several conditions that require extra preparation and attention. Both the Velis and Virus have specific winter requirements, and pilot comfort plus environmental hazards add to the workload.

Key points

Aircraft preparation (Velis)

  • Install the Pipistrel Winter Kit on the left air duct to prevent excessive battery cooling
  • Use the battery pre-heating system in cold conditions — read the instruction manual first
  • For windshield condensation, use the provided fans with batteries on the glareshield
  • Aircraft preparation (Virus)

  • Use the cabin heat system below the circuit breakers for defogging
  • Engine heating provides cabin warmth, but warm clothing is still advisable
  • Pilot comfort and safety

  • Velis has no heating — dress for cold
  • Heated Stoov blankets are available
  • Wet shoes create slippery rudder pedals — dry off before boarding
  • Keep wet clothing outside the cockpit to minimise condensation
  • Environmental hazards

  • Increased bird activity from Scandinavian migration — monitor BirdTAMs and AIP (ENR 5.6)
  • Report large bird flocks near the airport
  • Use landing lights when equipped — proven to reduce bird strikes
  • Freezing platform conditions: extra caution during manual aircraft movement
  • Required actions

  • Check Pipistrel Winter Kit is installed on Velis before flying in cold weather
  • Read the battery pre-heat instruction manual before using it
  • Carry/wear warm clothing regardless of aircraft
  • Check BirdTAMs and ENR 5.6 during flight planning in migration season
  • Use landing lights during winter days, especially low-light conditions
