Runway Approach Deviation — When 26 Isn't 08

Crew entered RWY26 circuit while RWY08 was active. Watch for confirmation bias on long flying days.

Background

During a training flight, the crew entered the circuit for runway 26 when runway 08 was active. The error was only discovered during final approach through radio communications with other traffic. The aircraft safely redirected to join the correct runway 08 circuit.

Contributing factors: multiple aircraft in the circuit (a Piper Cub in correct RH 08 circuit, a Cessna Caravan returning to Sierra), crew fatigue after a 3-leg navigation trip, miscommunication about runway in use, and the fact that the original departure runway was 08.

Key points

  • Confirmation bias is dangerous: the crew followed incorrect assumptions despite contrary indicators
  • Long flying days reduce vigilance — double-check critical information
  • When uncertain about runway or procedures, verify with ATC or Teuge Radio
  • It's better to verify one time too many than one time too few
  • Required actions

  • Always confirm active runway via radio call on initial contact, even if you just departed
  • If you hear traffic that contradicts your mental model, stop and verify before continuing
  • On long days with multiple legs, slow down on each circuit join — build the picture fresh
  • Brief yourself out loud: 'Runway in use is XX, I'm joining for XX'
