Avoiding collisions & filing airprox reports

Vigilant lookout, proactive announcements, early action. Always file an airprox report after evasive action.

Background

Recent incidents have required evasive action to avoid collisions in Teuge Airport airspace. All such incidents must be reported for collective learning and safety improvement. The procedure below is the standard for collision avoidance and reporting at E-Flight.

Key points

Maintain a vigilant lookout

  • Regular visual scans, including wing areas
  • Monitor radio for nearby traffic
  • Our white aircraft are hard to spot — assume others may not see you
  • Be proactive

  • Announce your position clearly on the radio
  • Use landing lights near high-traffic areas
  • Choose odd altitudes (1250' instead of 1000'/1500') to deconflict vertically
  • Take early action

  • Adjust altitude when traffic is reported nearby
  • Plan ahead when approaching reporting points
  • Don't hesitate to modify route for separation
  • Required actions

  • Scan continuously, including wing-blind areas, during all phases of flight
  • Use landing lights in high-traffic areas, even in good visibility
  • If you take evasive action, file an airprox report — always
