Engine failure after Engine Coolant Pump failure

A solo student experienced an Engine Coolant Pump failure on the Velis during taxiing and knew from the flight preparation that this aircraft had this caution before. The student called the FI about what the do. The advice was to switch off the aircraft for 30 seconds and switch it on again. Because the caution light remained on the student decided to return to E-Deck. While taxiing back the engine temperature increased leading to a loss of power while on the taxi track.

Because the engine power converter wasn’t cooled properly, the wiring to the converter from the motherboard was damaged (see photo).

  • Be aware that an Engine Coolant Pump failure can lead to an engine failure within minutes
  • Always follow the emergency checklist when the failure occurs and know the memory items by heart
  • The aircraft is always grounded after this caution is shown until further inspection from Hangar One
